YCs Go West

YCs pause for a group photo before touring Turner County Dairy, Parker, S.D. The AMPI member farm milks 1,600 cows three times daily in a double-28 parallel parlor.

All things dairy, flavored with generous side helpings of networking and family fun, were on the menu when AMPI Young Cooperators (YC) traveled to the co-op’s west side for this year’s summer tour.

A group of 15 YC families made the trek to South Dakota State University (SDSU) in Brookings, S.D., for the annual event focused on developing future co-op leaders. AMPI Young Cooperators are farmer-owners between the ages of 18 and 45.

“It’s easy to stay on the farm, but the YC events are an opportunity to build community with other young AMPI farmers. It is completely worth it,” said Amber Leuthold, who chairs the YC steering committee with her husband, Jeff. “You get a chance to meet other producers in similar shoes, share stories and thoughts, and hear both shared and differing perspectives.”
