Sturgeon Lake dairy farmer elected to co-op board

AMPI announces new, recognizes retiring board members

NEW ULM, Minn. (March 25, 2016) — Alan Overland, Sturgeon Lake, Minn., has been elected to the Associated Milk Producers Inc. (AMPI) Board of Directors. The AMPI dairy farmer-owner took his seat on the board prior to the AMPI Annual Meeting this spring.

“Our board members’ collective expertise will be instrumental as we work together to strengthen the co-op’s performance,” said AMPI Chairman of the Board Steve Schlangen, a dairy farmer from Albany, Minn.

The 20-member board is elected to represent the interests of fellow member-owners from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota. Directors in two of AMPI's six divisions are elected each year to serve a three-year term.

Overland and his wife, Connie, operate Balsam Grove Dairy in northeast Minnesota. The couple milk 24 registered Guernseys and farm more than 230 acres. Overland has served 27 years as an AMPI elected representative, including time as chairman of the resolutions committee.

Reelected to the board were Bruce Brockshus, Ocheyedan, Iowa; Calvin Graber, Hurley, S.D.; Alan Qual, Lisbon, N.D.; Michael Schiller, Freeport, Minn.; Steve Schlangen, Albany, Minn.; and Doug Temme, Wayne, Neb.

Two members retired from the board of directors. They were Brad Dejno, Independence, Wis., and Roger Lyon, Villard, Minn. Dejno served two years on the board and Lyon completed 24 years.

AMPI is headquartered in New Ulm, Minn., and owned by 2,200 Midwest dairy farm families from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota. AMPI members annually market about 5.9 billion pounds of milk, resulting in $1.7 billion in sales for the cooperative.

AMPI owns 10 Midwest-based manufacturing plants where 10 percent of the nation’s American-type cheese, butter, dried whey and sliced American cheese is produced. The cooperative’s award-winning cheese, butter and powdered dairy products are marketed to foodservice, retail and food ingredient customers.

Roger Lyon, left, of Villard, Minn., and Alan Overland of Sturgeon Lake, Minn., at the annual meeting of Associated Milk Producers Inc. Lyon was recognized for 24 years of service on the milk marketing cooperative’s board of directors. Overland is the newest member to the co-op's leadership team.
